![]() ![]() Throughout the 2020 campaign, Trump spread provably false disinformation about the voting process. Thomas, in Minnesota, called it a “form of a political coup d’état against our Constitution.” Michael Paulsen, a conservative legal scholar and professor at the University of St. There is broad agreement among experts that Trump’s most severe abuse of power was his relentless effort to undermine the 2020 election and overturn the legitimate results. Here is a breakdown of Trump’s 10 most significant abuses of power. While these 16 experts did not agree on everything, there was consensus that Trump’s pattern of abusing his powers for personal or political gain reached an alarming level that hasn’t been seen in modern history, and will have long-lasting consequences for the future of American democracy. To chronicle Trump’s most consequential abuses of power, CNN spoke with a politically diverse group of constitutional scholars, presidential historians and experts on democratic institutions. And some of the most egregious abuses of power weren’t clear at the time but came into focus after exhaustive investigations. It was hard to keep track amid the daily deluge of controversial tweets and distractions that were a hallmark of the Trump presidency. While we would never dream of suggesting that a member of the Trump family had told a lie, congressional Democrats are.well let’s just say they’re a bit piqued at the idea that the Trump Organization would claim the Secret Service bunked for free and then charge them $650 a night.Former President Donald Trump flouted the limits of presidential power unlike any of his recent predecessors, leaving behind a legacy of unmatched abuses that range from violations of longstanding norms to potentially criminal behavior. In addition, the Secret Service was charged $17,000 a month to use a three-bedroom cottage at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, “an unusually high rent for homes in that area, according to receipts from 2017.” Which is strange not just because of the sky-high rates, but because of a statement made by Eric Trump last year-around the time Trump tried to convince people it was totally legitimate and not at all corrupt to hold the G7 conference at Trump Doral-in which he said: “If my father travels, stay at our properties for free-meaning, like, cost for housekeeping.” taxpayers-rates as high as $650 per night while staying at his properties. According to an investigation by the Washington Post, the Trump Organization charges the president’s security detail-by which we of course mean U.S. What we didn’t know until last week, though, was that another fun money-making scheme the president has got going is one in which his family business seemingly gouges the Secret Service every time it travels to one of his properties to protect him. And, naturally, there are the many trips to Mar-a-Lago, which we already knew were costing taxpayers millions. (“Why wouldn’t I stay at his hotel blocks from the White House, so I can tell the new president, ‘I love your new hotel!’ Isn’t it rude to come to his city and say, ‘I am staying at your competitor?’” an Asian diplomat told the Washington Post in 2016.) Then there’s the ability to use state visits abroad to pimp his money-losing golf clubs, where he can also “suggest” Mike Pence spend the night despite it making no logistical sense. For instance, Republican lawmakers, corporate executives with business before the Justice Department, foreign officials, and anyone looking to kiss the ring knows full well that their money will go far at the Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C., located less than a mile from the Oval Office. Of course, in other ways, being the leader of the free world has been fantastic for Trump’s business, which he still profits from. Those issues have led to tenants in New York’s Trump Tower selling their condos at a loss just to escape the taint by association canceled hotel chains and “ sharp decline” at his prized resorts. ![]() ![]() In some ways, being president of the United States hasn’t been entirely great for Donald Trump’s bottom line, thanks to his name being synonymous with mass corruption, sexual misconduct, likely tax fraud, outspoken racism, possible anti-Semitism, and irrefutable mental instability. ![]()
